Tikapur is a dense, dark brown rug with a surface that looks woven even at close range — small pale fibres break through the dark ground and give it a mottled, almost earthy character. No decoration, no border; just material.
The rug is hand-woven in Nepal in equal parts banana silk and hemp. Hemp is one of the strongest natural fibres and gives the rug a robust, slightly coarse character; the banana silk brings in the paler, glossier fibres that make the surface come alive. The combination is typical of Nepalese craftsmanship, which has long worked with locally grown fibres.
A rug like this is made to be used. It works in a living room with plenty of foot traffic, under a dining table or in a generous hallway. The dark tone hides everyday wear well, and the coarse texture means the rug grows more beautiful with the years. Can be ordered in custom sizes.
