Theodore Alexander – classic furniture in a contemporary execution
Cabinetmaking from historical models, since 1996.
Theodore Alexander was founded in 1996 by Paul Maitland-Smith, but the story begins earlier. He was an antiques dealer in London in the 1950s, and in the seventies he began having Chippendale chairs made to his own drawings for sale in London. In 1991 he moved to Vietnam and built up a workshop where he trained local craftsmen in fine cabinetmaking. The business is still run from there today, with its American headquarters in High Point, North Carolina.
The starting point is historical models — furniture types and details with a long tradition — executed with today's methods and quality control. The choice of materials reflects the eighteenth-century originals: copper and brass, porcelain, leather, shagreen, lacquer and eggshell, set in contexts that work in a modern home. The finishes are applied by hand, giving the surface a depth that machine finishing rarely achieves.
Explore our selection of Theodore Alexander furniture. The range spans from individual console tables and cabinets to complete dining room suites, making it possible to furnish an entire room within the same design language. Individual pieces also work well as accents in rooms with otherwise more modern interiors, where the classic form lends weight. For those building up a room over time, the breadth is an advantage: complementary pieces can be added later in the same design language and finish.
The finish determines how a piece of furniture meets the other surfaces in the room, and the difference between two finishes is most apparent in daylight. In our showroom in Ă–stermalm, Stockholm, you can compare the finishes up close, see how brass and dark woods interact with textiles and wall colours, and get help planning a complete furnishing scheme.
”Tradition is a toolbox, not a constraint.”
