Makalu has a surface that looks knitted. Short, staggered dashes lie in rows across a pale, sand-coloured ground, creating a fine grid pattern that is felt more than seen — a low-key liveliness in the surface rather than a pattern you notice from across the room.
The rug is handwoven in Nepal in equal parts wool and aloe. The aloe fibre is strong, slightly stiffer than wool and has a natural, cool sheen; together the materials yield a rug that is soft to walk on yet holds its shape. Nepalese weavers have a long tradition of precisely this kind of mixed-fibre rug, and the craftsmanship shows in the even, dense surface.
Makalu is made for rooms that already have plenty to look at — a living room with paintings and patterned textiles, or a bedroom where the calm should lie on the floor. It also works beautifully in a large room where the surface needs to hold together. Can be ordered in custom sizes.
