Abaca Uni is the rug you choose when the floor should be quiet. A single colour in nature's own tone — somewhere between straw, linen and bleached sand — and entirely without pattern, apart from what the weave itself creates: fine horizontal lines where the bundles of fibre meet.
It is handwoven in the Philippines from abaca, a strong natural fibre extracted from the leaf stalks of a banana plant. The material has a faint natural sheen that catches the daylight and makes the rug shift through the day, from almost white in the morning light to a warm gold in the afternoon.
This is a neutral foundation in the best sense of the word. It works beneath a dark sofa, in a bedroom with linen tones or in a large room that needs to be held together without adding yet another pattern. Abaca stands up to foot traffic and suits dry spaces; over the years the fibre softens and the tone deepens.
