Abaca Raye is a flatweave rug with broad stripes in natural white and near-black — a graphic, pared-back look that works as well in a summer house as in a restrained city apartment. The stripes run along the length of the rug and give the room direction; lay it in a hallway or beneath a dining table and it draws the eye through the room.
The rug is handwoven in the Philippines from abaca, a fibre extracted from the leaf stalks of a banana plant that grows wild in the Philippine jungle. The fibre is strong, pale and naturally glossy, and the coarse weave makes the rug pleasingly irregular — every metre bears traces of the hand that wove it.
Abaca withstands wear and is therefore a rewarding choice for areas with a lot of foot traffic. It is happiest in dry spaces and prefers to avoid direct contact with water. Over time the fibre softens and the natural white takes on a warmer, honeyed tone — the rug grows more beautiful the longer it lies.
