The term Gabbeh comes from the Persian word for “uncut.” It refers to the style of carpet used by the nomadic tribes of southwestern Iran.
The long pile and dense wool structure meant that Gabbeh rugs were used as flooring in the tents of the Ghashqai and Lori tribes. The rich natural colors come from natural dyes in plants and shrubs and are used to dye the wool with which they are tied.
The design of Gabbeh rugs is inspired by nature, as seen in the animal and plant motifs on the rugs. With a combination of strong colors and simple linear design, Gabbeh rugs have gained a lot of attention. This has led to mass-produced imitations outside of Iran. These rugs do not have the quality or originality found in Iranian rugs, so this is something you have to be careful about when buying a Gabbeh rug.
