Marigold dates from 1875 and was drawn by William Morris. The pattern is built on observed nature rather than ornament, and that difference is what makes it work to this day.

The pattern repeat is 22.5 cm, which makes it a small repeat. The small scale makes the pattern discreet enough to carry an entire room. The pattern is a straight match, which simplifies making up. Marigold is available in 6 colourways — Olive/Linen, Brick/Manilla, China Blue/Ivory and Indigo/Linen, among others. The difference between them is greater than you might think — the same pattern can make a room either muted or light.

Marigold is part of Queen Square from Morris & Co.

The fabric is 142 cm wide and woven in a cotton blend. The Martindale rating is 12 000 rubs, which places the fabric in the curtain and decorative class rather than upholstery.

The pattern works particularly well in living rooms and bedrooms. The look carries a classic poise, elegance and timelessness, on a dark ground. Large-scale motifs come into their own on curtains and larger surfaces, less so on cushions and details.
