The Matrix fabric from G P & J Baker is built around a textured surface.

Matrix comes in 13 colourways — Sand, Parchment, Spice and Crimson, among others. The colourways differ more than you might expect; choose according to the light in the room.

The pattern belongs to the Essential Colours collection.

The fabric is 137 cm wide and woven in a cotton blend. With 40 000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it handles upholstery in the home with a comfortable margin.

The look carries a classic poise, elegance and sophisticated restraint, with a dark base tone. It works just as well for curtains as for upholstery — keep the rest of the textiles in the room simple.

The palette is dominated by red — dark and deep in tone, with a warm undertone. Consider which way the room faces — north light pulls colours cooler than they appear on the sample.
