With its plain surface, Melford sits firmly within the Sanderson design language. The house was founded in 1860 by Arthur Sanderson in Islington, London.

The pattern repeat is 1.0 cm, which makes it a small repeat. The small scale keeps the pattern discreet enough to carry an entire room. The pattern is a straight match, which makes hanging easier. Melford comes in 29 colourways — Dove Grey, Turtledove, Pebble and Raffia, among others. The difference between them is greater than you might think — the same pattern can give you a muted room or a light one.

The fabric is 138.5 cm wide and woven in a cotton blend. At 40 000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it handles upholstery in a home setting with a good margin.

The pattern works particularly well in living rooms and bedrooms. The look combines timelessness, a relaxed feel and a closeness to nature, on a very light ground. Large-scale motifs come into their own on curtains and larger surfaces, less so on cushions and details.
