Fruit Velvet was drawn in 1865 by William Morris. The pattern is one of the designs that have stayed in production ever since, and it is not hard to see why — Morris worked from plants he had in front of him, not from decorative schemes.

The pattern repeat is 62.5 cm, which makes it a large repeat. That makes the pattern a distinct feature that carries a room on its own — allow for extra material when matching the pattern. The pattern is a straight match, which makes hanging easier. Fruit Velvet comes in 4 colourways — Indigo/Slate, Madder/Bayleaf, Walnut/Bullrush and Privet/Thyme. The colourways differ more than you might expect; choose according to the light in the room.

The pattern belongs to the Rouen Velvets collection. The velvet catches the light and gives the pattern a depth that a print on flat-woven cloth cannot achieve.

The fabric is 133 cm wide and woven in a cotton blend. At 40 000 rubs on the Martindale scale, it handles upholstery in a home setting with a good margin.
