Afghanistan's oldest carpet traditions have mostly been maintained by nomads. The main color is often red. Most of Afghanistan's nomadic tribes belong to the Turkmen people group. The primitive power of their patterns makes the carpets some of the best examples of nomadic craftsmanship. The carpets are among the most popular because the price is quite low and the patterns are calm and neutral. The wool used for Afghan carpets is usually of excellent quality and after a few years of use it becomes like silk. Some old Afghan carpets, where the colors have been softened, are particularly sought after in the West.
