Oyster Veneer
An oyster veneer coffee table by Jonathan Charles with hand painted Italian gold leaf Eglomise decoration on the glass top. Made with beautiful rich walnut on top of hand-turned barley twisted legs, the oyster veneer adds a particularly intricate look to the table. O yster veneers are a decorative type of parquetry, where thin slices of wood branches or roots are cut in cross-section, in this case from small branches of walnut. The resulting circular or oval pieces of veneer are laid side by side in furniture to produce various decorative patterns and shapes that resemble an oyster. The finishing look is exquisitely textured and beautifully eye catching.
The Beauty of ĂglomisĂ©
ĂglomisĂ© is an ancient technique of glass painting and decorating that dates back to the Egyptian times. It is a process where the reverse side of a piece of glass is gilded with gold or silver leaf using a gelatin adhesive. The result is a mirror-like, softly reflective surface that when combined with reverse painting techniques creates rich, shimmering and beautifully reflective pieces of artwork. The process is extremely difficult, delicate and elaborate. A coffee table made with this intricate decoration would suit a beautifully ornate living room.
