Kashan rugs are visually stunning and have somewhat similar patterns, a central medallion with motifs of flowers and other garden motifs. These rugs from the Kashan area (150 miles from Tehran) are of exceptional quality, especially the older rugs.
The sizes of Kashan carpets vary greatly from the smaller 80x120cm up to the larger 400x600cm. Red, blue and green dominate most carpets with many different color tones. Usually the carpets are made of wool and the warp is usually made of a soft and thin cotton, except for the slightly more exclusive carpets where the warp is made of silk and in some cases even the entire carpet. The carpets are tied with Persian knots and the quality of the carpets is usually measured by the knot density which varies from 250,000 knots up to silk carpets with 1,000,000 knots per square meter.
