Turkmenistan is located in southwest Asia and carpets are often knotted by Turkmen tribes living in the southern part (bordering Iran and Afghanistan) who have always been semi-nomadic. The carpets from Turkmenistan are named after the nomadic group that made them. They knot all objects used in everyday life, from cradles to tent curtains. Knotting carpets, sacks and similar objects is typical of almost all nomadic peoples in central Asia, but it is among the Turkmen tribes that this activity plays the most important role in both the life of the individual and the collective. The interest of the Western world in these carpets has been enormous. Carpets from Turkmenistan are knotted on moving vertical looms with the asymmetrical knot.
