Carpet knotting is a very old tradition in Tabriz and the city is famous for its fine carpets. Here you will find a wide variety of different Tabriz carpets, all of which are assessed in quality through raj. The term defines the number of knots on 7 centimeters of the carpet's width. The carpets are available in the simpler bazaar quality of 24 raj up to an incredible 110 raj. For example, if a carpet has 1,000,000 knots per square meter, it is defined as 60 raj.
Tabriz carpets have many different types of patterns from medallions, Herati, Mahi, to figural motifs with floral, vase, tree and hunting themes, even 3D motifs. The carpets from Tabriz are among the best in Iran and come in different qualities. Korkull (the best sheep wool) with silk inserts is used to make finer carpets. A fine Tabriz carpet also has a short, rough pile and high raj.
