Even before the birth of Christ, Armenians in the South Caucasus worked on knotting oriental carpets. From their Kazak carpets you can expect the highest possible quality and craftsmanship. The Kazak carpets are known for their magnificent patterns with many medallions and strong colors.
There are three types of Kazak carpets and they come from different districts. Bordjalou Kazak carpets have simple patterns in red, blue, purple and brown tones. Carpets from an area south of Bordjalou have shorter piles and more formal patterns. Carpets from the Yerevan area are often slightly longer and thinner. They have more red and blue than the purple tones usually seen in Kazak carpets and the pattern is simpler.
Today, Kazak rugs are made in northern Afghanistan. They feature Caucasian geometric patterns and the wool is dyed with natural plant dyes. The rugs are durable with a very short pile and are sold under the name Kazak.
