The Arts & Crafts movement originated in Britain in the 19th century and was an art movement that had a major influence on crafts, interior design, architecture and gardening. The movement sought a style that was a reaction against the eclectic and historical styles that the Industrial Revolution had created. The movement advocated craftsmanship over machine-made products and personal style over historical styles.

The Arts & Crafts movement wanted to return to traditional crafts and with that craftsmen now had the same status as artists. To clearly demonstrate the craftsmanship and so many of the objects were left unfinished, the movement also showed a preference for rural idyll and neo-Gothic. The artist, pattern designer, designer and writer William Morris is considered by many to be the representative of the Arts & Crafts movement. His vision was to make beautiful objects accessible to everyone, even to those in lower social classes. William Morris's daughter Mary "May" Morris is considered one of the female pioneers of the Arts & Crafts movement, she was also the one who designed, among other things, "Honeysuckle" which is one of Morris & Co's bestsellers to this day.
